New Year’s resolution or not, starting a gym routine can be a challenge. You may not feel like you have the time, money, or energy to make going to the gym a regular habit, but it just takes some motivation — and a little organization. As you begin to set your fitness and health goals, you will also want to gather your gym bag essentials. Here’s what to pack in your gym bag so that you’re fully prepared to kick-start your gym routine.

Finding a Gym That Works for You

The first step in building a gym routine is finding a gym or workout location that works for you. Take into consideration your priorities. What’s convenient and in your price range? Are you willing to spend more on a gym that’s easier to get to?

If cost is a worry, check to see what your community offers. Some neighborhoods and residential communities provide gym access to residents at no extra cost. If you don’t have access to this amenity, try searching for online fitness classes or available gyms in your local area.

When deciding on a gym, take a look at every aspect. How much is the membership? Do they have the workout equipment you want? Do they offer specialty classes? Do they have showers? Your fitness and health goals will help you determine what gym is right for you — and how to pack your gym bag.

What to Pack in Your Gym Bag

What are you looking to achieve from your gym routine? Do you want to build up your strength? Improve your endurance? Work on your cardio health? Do you plan on taking classes, hiring a personal trainer, or creating your own exercise program?

Whatever your plans are for the gym, you’ll need to be prepared with a well-stocked gym bag. Here are some gym bag essentials we recommend you have when you hit the gym.

Workout Clothes

If you plan on going to the gym while you’re on the go, be sure to bring a fresh set of workout clothes. Don’t forget every crucial piece: a moisture-wicking shirt or tank top, pants or gym shorts that allow you to move freely, comfortable socks, and — of course — proper workout shoes

Towels

No matter what your workout plan is for the day, prepare to get sweaty. Many gyms offer towels free of charge (others may require a small fee), but if you’d rather use your own, it’s good to have a small hand towel in your bag. If your gym has showers, you may also want to bring a larger towel for washing up after your gym session.

Essential Toiletries

Of course, you’ll want to stay fresh after your workout, so remember to pack some travel-sized toiletries, including deodorant, soap, and shampoo/conditioner. If you have long hair, make sure to have extra hairbands or headbands on hand. You may also want to bring non-slip shower shoes to protect your feet in the locker room and showers.

Fresh Post-Workout Outfit

Don’t forget about what you’ll need after your workout, too. If you plan on freshening up at the gym, you’ll want to have a set of post-workout clothes as well — that includes a fresh pair of underwear and socks (these can be easy to forget!).

Earbuds/Headphones

Have a playlist that gets you in the zone? Maybe you want to fill the silence with an engaging podcast or audiobook? For some, the most essential gym bag item is a good set of earbuds or headphones that allow you to move freely and get motivated.

Reusable Water Bottle

It’s important to stay hydrated, especially when you’re getting in a good sweat. Be prepared with a full bottle of water or one that you can easily fill up at the gym.

Workout Journal

This gym bag essential will help you stay on task. Write down your gym routine to help structure your workouts, give you some accountability, and track your progress. A pen and journal are good to have on hand, but you can also download one of the many apps available to keep track of your workouts, goals, and milestones.
